Mulesing – Why It Matters in Conscious Fashion
Conscious fashion is more than a trend. It is a set of choices we make — as a brand and as individuals — choices that have a real impact on people, the environment, and animals. One issue that deserves more attention in this conversation is mulesing.
What is mulesing?Czym jest mulesing?
Mulesing is a practice primarily used in the farming of Merino sheep. It involves the surgical removal of strips of skin from around the sheep’s tail to prevent flystrike and infection. In its traditional form, the procedure is painful and invasive, and is often carried out without pain relief.
Although it has long been treated as an industry standard, there is growing recognition today that humane alternatives exist — methods that protect animal health without causing unnecessary suffering.
Why is mulesing a problem?
In a world increasingly shaped by ethical awareness, mulesing raises serious concerns. It conflicts with the principles of animal welfare and forces us to reflect on how the materials we wear are sourced.
For us, the key question is not “Is it efficient?”
It is “Is it right?”
Our values at Nishove
At Nishove, we believe that beauty should never come at the cost of suffering. We stand for fashion that is:
rooted in respect for animals,
created with care and responsibility,
transparent — and unafraid to address difficult topics.
Ethics are not an optional add-on to our products. They are the foundation of everything we do. Every material choice, every production decision, and every design is part of a broader commitment to doing better — not faster.
Conscious choices matter
More and more farmers are moving away from mulesing in favor of alternative animal welfare practices. More brands are saying no to outdated methods. And more consumers are asking the right questions — where does what I wear really come from?
This shift matters.
Because fashion has power. It can reinforce old systems — or… help build a more responsible future.
Why we talk about it
Because awareness is the first step toward responsibility. We do not believe in ignoring uncomfortable truths. We believe in education, transparency, and inspiring change through thoughtful choices.
At Nishove, we choose a path of mindfulness.
For animals.
For people.
For the future.
Wool at Nishove – Responsible Sources, Conscious ChoicesWełna w Nishove – odpowiedzialne źródła, świadome decyzje
At Nishove, we mainly work with wool from stock – materials that already exist and do not require additional production. This is an important step for us towards reducing overproduction and waste of resources.
At the same time, we are deeply committed to ensuring that the fabrics we select meet high ethical standards. That is why we use only wool certified by the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), which guarantees animal welfare and enforces a strict no-mulesing policy throughout the entire supply chain.
This combination — using existing resources while consciously choosing certified materials — reflects our philosophy. To create less, but better. With respect for animals, people, and the environment.
